[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of Panax notoginseng of the Araliaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 50-100cm high. The rhizome is horizontal, with swollen nodes and short internodes. Each node has a shallow annular stem base scar, which is bamboo whip-like, and there are often several conical fleshy roots on the sides. The stem is erect, cylindrical, striated, smooth and hairless. Palmate compound leaves, 3-5 in whorls at the end of the stem; petiole 8-11cm long; 7 leaflets, narrowly elongated or narrowly lanceolate, more than 5 times longer than wide, the widest part is below the middle of the leaf, about 3cm wide, with a long tail-like acuminate tip and finely serrated edges. Umbel solitary at the top of the stem, with 50-80 flowers; inflorescence about 12-20cm long, striped, glabrous or slightly pubescent; flowers small, light green; pedicels slightly pubescent; calyx with 2 teeth, triangular-ovate, glabrous; 5 petals, long ovate; 5 stamens, filaments shorter than petals; ovary inferior, 2-5-chambered, styles 2-5, fused below the middle, curved outwards when fruiting. The berry is drupe-like, nearly spherical, and red when ripe. There are 2-5 seeds, which are white, triangular-ovate, and about 4.5 mm long. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from July to September.

【Nature and flavor】 Slightly bitter; sweet; warm

【Functions and indications】 Disperses blood stasis and stops bleeding; promotes blood circulation and relieves pain; detoxifies and reduces swelling. It is used for hemoptysis, hematemesis, epistaxis, hematuria, bloody stool, metrorrhagia, excessive postpartum bleeding, abdominal pain due to blood stasis, amenorrhea, bruises and swellings, bleeding due to trauma, swelling and poisoning due to sores, and snake bites.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3-9g; or made into pills or powder; or soaked in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount and grind into powder for application.
