Leaves are opposite; sessile or with short petioles; leaf blades are nearly circular, broadly obovate or broadly elliptic, 5-12mm long, sometimes up to 20mm, 3.5-10mm wide, with rounded apex, obtuse or sometimes nearly cordate base, glabrous on both sides; lateral veins are usually 4 pairs, obvious on the back. Flowers solitary in bracts, forming terminal dense spikes, 1-4cm long, 1-3 per plant, sometimes 5-7; flowers extremely small, about 2mm long, almost sessile; bracts leaf-like, ovate or ovate-oblong, as long as flowers, 2 bracteoles, lanceolate or subulate, almost as long as calyx tube; calyx tube broadly bell-shaped, membranous, translucent, 1-1.5mm long, 4 lobes, triangular, no appendages between lobes; 4 petals, obovate, lavender-red, about twice as long as calyx teeth; 4 stamens; ovary nearly pear-shaped, about 2mm long, style 1/2 the length of ovary, stigma disc-shaped.
