[Other names] Trees where crows don’t stand, 竻当 (Records of Herbal Medicine Collection in Lingnan), Trees where birds don’t roost, Thrush frame (Lingnan Herbal Compendium), Thorny Tree (Handbook of Commonly Used Chinese Herbal Medicines by Guangzhou Army).

[Source] It is the root of the Rutaceae plant. Available all year round.

[Original form] Evergreen shrub or tree, up to 12 meters high. Trunk and branches with reddish-brown prickles. Leaves are alternate; odd-pinnate compound leaves, with 7-23 leaflets: the total axis is 7-12 cm long, with a few or no thorns; the leaflets are oblique-obovate or oblique-rectangular, 2-5 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, the terminal leaflet is rectangular, up to 7 cm long, obtuse at the apex, narrow at the base to form a short petiole, with entire and slightly wavy margins; or with inconspicuous shallow round serrations above the middle. The panicle is terminal, sparsely trifurcated, or 2-3 times umbel-like branched, about the same length as the leaves; the inflorescence stalk is 5-9 cm long; the flowers are unisexual, with 5 sepals, ovate; the petals are 5, white, about 2 mm long; the male flowers have 5 stamens, with short reduced carpels; the female flowers have stamens reduced to scales, 2 carpels, and a capitate stigma. The follicles are purple-red with large glandular dots. The seeds are shiny black. Flowering period is from June to August. The fruiting period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in wasteland, hillsides, stream valley bushes or sparse woods. Distributed in southern my country.

[Chemical composition] The bark contains diosmin, hesperidin, leucoderma, as well as sterols, phenolic components and organic acids. The root bark contains rosmarin, hesperidin, diosmin and rosmarin.

[Nature and flavor] "Ben Cao Qiu Yuan": "spicy, warm."

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind, eliminate dampness, reduce swelling, and dredge meridians. Treat sore throat, jaundice, malaria, rheumatic bone pain, and bruises.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 1 to 2 liang; or soak in wine and drink. For external use: soak in wine and rub on the affected area.

[Additional prescription] ①For the treatment of chronic hepatitis: decocted 1 to 2 liang of dried root of Yingbubo in water and taken orally.
