[Original form] Hawk's claw maple is an evergreen woody vine, 2-5m long. Young branches are slender, purple and hairless. The leaves are palmately trifoliate; the lower part of the nutrient branches is often simple, with a 3-8cm long thick petiole, alternate or clustered on the ends of short branches; the leaflets are thickly leathery, elliptical to oblong-obovate, 5-13cm long, 3-7.5cm wide, with a sharp tip, a broad cuneate base, or nearly rounded, entire, shiny, smooth and glabrous on both sides; the midrib is concave above and obviously convex below, the petiolules are 1.5-3.5cm long, and have joints at the base. The umbels are axillary, with short stalks or nearly sessile, the flowers are unisexual and monoecious; the pedicels are 2-4 cm long; the sepals are oblong, about 1 cm long, and obtuse at the apex; the male flowers are white, with 6 stamens, free, and the filaments are nearly the same length as the anthers; the female flowers are purple, with small reduced stamens, 3 carpels, and oblong. The berries are oval, juicy, 4-6cm long, and purple-red; the seeds are numerous, black, and oblate. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruiting period is June-September.
