The leaves are collected in summer and used fresh or dried in the shade. [Original form] Shrub, 1 to 2 meters high. The bark is light gray or dark gray; much branched, the twigs are green and have glandular scales. Simple leaves are alternate; oblong or ovate-lanceolate, 3-7 cm long, 1.5-3.5 cm wide, with acute apex, cuneate base, nearly entire margin, glabrous above, with scattered white glandular scales, sometimes sparsely coarse hairs at the base of the margin, lighter in color below, with glandular scales; petiole about 5 mm long. 1 to 3 flowers grow at the top of last year's branches, opening before leaves, pedicels 5 to 10 mm long, with white glandular scales; sepals short, hairy; corolla light purple-red; 10 stamens; style longer than corolla. The capsule is 1 to 1.5 cm long, dark brown, 5-chambered, and dehiscent at the tip. Flowering period is from April to May. Fruiting period is June. 【Habitat distribution】Grows in mountains. Distributed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei and other places. 【Chemical composition】 Contains saponins, tannins, reducing substances, polysaccharides, flavonoids, neutral resins, sterols, fats and volatile oils. The flavonoids in the leaves include quercetin, gossypol flavonoids, 5-methylkaempferol and/or 5-methylmyricetin, dihydroquercetin, and coumarins. The volatile oil content in the leaves (dry leaves) was 0.18% in mid-August, 0.20% in late September, and 0.08% in mid-October; the tannin content was 9.31%. In addition, the leaves contain four phenolic acids: p-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid, vanillic acid and syringic acid. The young branches also contain triterpenes. 【Pharmacological action】 ①Expectorant and antitussive effect [Toxicity] The median lethal dose of the decoction administered orally to mice is 116.5 g/kg. 【Function】 "Jilin Chinese Herbal Medicine": "Relieves exterior symptoms, clears the lungs, and relieves cough. Treats colds, headaches, coughs, and bronchitis." [Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3 to 5 qian; or soaked in wine. [Additional prescription] To treat cough and wheezing: 50 cents of azalea and 1 jin of white wine, soak for 5 days. Drink one cup of wine each time, twice a day.
