The efficacy and function of Yingshi

[Other names] Rose seeds (Tao Hongjing), wild rose seeds (Eastern Medical Treasure Mirror), stone coral (Compendium of Materia Medica Supplement).

[Source] It is the fruit of the Rosa multiflora plant of the Rosaceae family. Harvest from August to September, the best ones are the half green and half red unripe fruits. After picking, dry them in the shade and store them tightly to avoid air leakage.

[Properties] The dried fruit is oval, about 6 to 8 mm long, with a fruit stalk and a lobe with a persistent receptacle at the top. The fruit has a reddish-brown outer skin and a thick, fleshy pericarp inside. The seeds are yellowish brown, with white hairs between the flesh and the seeds, and the flesh tastes sweet and sour. The best ones are large, uniform, thick and free of impurities.

[Chemical composition] The fruit contains rose glycoside or rutin, fatty oil (including palmitic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid). The peel contains tomatine and α-carotene.

【Functions and indications】Promote diuresis, eliminate heat, promote blood circulation and detoxify. Treat edema, athlete's foot, sores, carbuncles, difficulty urinating, and abdominal pain during menstruation.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 1 to 3 qian; soak in wine or make into pills or powder. For external use: mash and apply or decoct in water for washing.

[Additional prescription] ① For treating nephritis, beriberi and edema in strong constitution: 1 qian of Yingshi (crushed), 2 qian of corn silk, 2 qian of elderberry flower, 2 qian of coix seed and 1 qian of licorice. Decoction. (Compendium of Materia Medica)
