【Pharmacological action】 ①Treatment of schistosomiasis

[Toxicity] Daylily root is highly toxic to the host. The pathological changes it causes to mice are mainly manifested as widespread softening and demyelination of the white matter of the brain and spinal cord and optic nerve fibers, while the lesions in the gray matter are generally mild. In addition, there are varying degrees of turbid swelling in the liver and kidney cells, and congestion or macular hemorrhage in the lungs. The symptoms of poisoning in rabbits and dogs include dilated pupils, loss of light reflex, blindness, paralysis of the hind limbs, and bladder retention, leading to death. Rabbits develop proteinuria when poisoned by daylily root, but no bilirubin, and serum transaminase is also normal, indicating that the kidneys are mainly damaged, and the liver is not hurt. Abnormal sugar metabolism can be seen from the appearance of sugar in the urine and decreased glucose tolerance. The toxicity of daylilies is mainly concentrated in the roots, and its toxicity varies greatly depending on its origin. Heating above 60°C can weaken the toxicity or even completely destroy it. Daylily root has a large accumulation effect in the body. Animals infected with schistosomiasis have lower tolerance to daylily root than those uninfected. Soaking it in rice water cannot reduce the toxicity of the drug, but Coptis chinensis and Phellodendron chinense can partially eliminate its toxicity.
