[Source] Medicinal material source: The fruit of Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb. of the Celastraceae family.

[Original form] Celastrus orbiculatus is a deciduous climbing shrub, up to 3-8m tall. The twigs are cylindrical, gray-brown or dark brown, with numerous lenticels. Simple leaves are alternate; petiole is 1-2cm long; leaf blade is nearly circular, broadly obovate or oblong-obovate, 5-10cm long, 3-7cm wide, acuminate or mucronate at apex, cuneate at base, occasionally truncated, with blunt serrations on margin. Axillary short cymes with 5-7 yellowish green flowers, dioecious; calyx lobes 5, ovate; petals 5, ovate-oblong, 4-5mm long; female flowers with 5 stamens; 1 pistil, superior ovary, nearly spherical, stigma 3-lobed; male flowers have slightly longer stamens and degenerate pistils. Capsule spherical, 7-8mm in diameter. The seeds are ovate to elliptical, with a red fleshy aril. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruit ripening period is September-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in hills, ravines and hillside bushes.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The capsule is yellow, spherical, about 1 cm in diameter, 3-cleft, and turns yellow-brown after drying. There are 2 seeds in each locule, with red fleshy aril. It has a slight peculiar smell and tastes sweet, sour and fishy.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet; slightly bitter; neutral

【Functions and indications】Nourishes the heart and soothes the mind; regulates blood circulation and relieves pain. It is used for palpitations, insomnia, forgetfulness, dreaminess, toothache, tendon and bone pain, numbness of waist and legs, and pain from falls.
