[Source] Medicinal material source: The tuberous root of Aristolochia australis of the Aristolochiaceae family.

[Original form] A woody vine of Aristolochia sphenanthera. The tubers are oblong or oval, and often connected. Branchlets smooth or slightly longitudinally ridged, densely covered with brown long hairs when young. Leaves are alternate; petioles are 1-2 cm long, densely covered with brown long hairs. The leaves are leathery, broadly oblong-oblanceolate, linear or oblong, 7-20cm long, and the width often varies greatly due to different shapes. Usually 5-10cm wide at the top, gradually narrowing downwards, with the lowest part only 1-2cm wide. Sometimes the upper and lower parts are nearly as wide, 2-6cm wide, with short or acuminate tips, narrow cordate base, margins entire or with 1-3 wavy circular teeth on each side of the upper part, or sometimes only one side with teeth and the other side entire, densely covered with fine soft hairs on the underside, and with inverted soft hairs along the veins. Flowers solitary or in pairs, sometimes arranged in racemes, born in leaf axils or old stems; pedicels slender, 3-4cm long, sparsely covered with long soft hairs; bracteoles attached to pedicels near base, subulate; flowers pink at first, dark brown later, perianth tube sharply curved in the middle, 2-3cm long at the bottom, 3-5mm in diameter, nearly as long as the lower part from the curved part to the fringe but slightly narrower, often 1/3 attached to the lower part, with longitudinal veins, covered with brown long soft hairs on the outside, densely covered with fine soft hairs near base on the inside; fringe expanded disc-shaped, round, 1.5-3cm in diameter, with shallow 3-lobed margins, lobes flat, broadly ovate, nearly equal in size; anthers oblong, up to 3mm long, attached to the syncytium in pairs; ovary cylindrical, about 1cm long, 6-ribbed; syncytium apex 3-lobed, lobes pointed at the apex, margins extending downward, with nipple-like projections. The capsule is oblong, about 4 cm long, and splits into 6 petals when mature. The flowering period is from May to September, and the fruiting period is from October to December.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in sunny and dry sparse forests.
