[Source] Medicinal material source: The gills of the manta ray , Manta birostris , Manta japonicus and related species of Manta rays.

[Original form] 1. Manta ray with two snouts and a diamond-shaped body disc, more than 6 meters wide and weighing more than 2000kg. The width of the body disc is 2.2-2.4 times its length, with a convex front edge and a concave rear edge. The head is broad and slightly protruding, with a flat front edge. The front part of the pectoral fin is differentiated into laterally flattened cephalic fins, which are located on both sides of the head. They are large and oblong, can swing freely, and can roll up from bottom to top into a tubular shape. The eyes are large, laterally positioned, with a wide interval between the eyes. The eyeball is about twice as wide as the blowhole, and the blowhole is transversely oval. The nostrils are subanterior, in front of the maxillary angle. The mouth is located in the front, very wide, with a protruding lower jaw, no teeth in the upper jaw, and a narrow tooth band in the lower jaw. The teeth are small, granular, and arranged in about 100 vertical rows. The gill openings are wide and about equal in distance from front to back. There is a small dorsal fin, which is about 1/2 the size of the pelvic fin. Its starting point is approximately the same as the pelvic fin. The pelvic fin is relatively small and rectangular, and is approximately at the same level as the posterior corner of the pectoral fin. The tail is short and thin, about 1.2 times the length of the trunk. There is one tail spine, which is short and wide and wrapped under the skin. The back of the body is light bluish-gray, the front of the head and the back of the tail are dark brown, the outer edge of the body disc is gray-brown, the outer and rear parts of the pectoral fins and pelvic fins are bluish-gray, and the area around the anus is black. The larger ones have dark blue-brown dorsal surface, a pair of large oval gray-white spots from the head to the shoulder area, and a pale white ventral surface.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: It is a large warm-water upper-middle layer ray. The main food is planktonic crustaceans and small fish.

[Properties] Identification of properties: This product is slightly ear-shaped, about 40cm long and 16cm wide. The whole body is composed of more than 100 gill flaps, and each gill flap is composed of 37 separate flaps arranged symmetrically on the left and right. The upper part is gray-black, and the lower part is covered by a very thin yellow folding membrane. The texture is tough. It has a slightly fishy smell and a slightly salty taste.

【Chemical composition】 Gills contain mucin, N-tetracosanamido-Δ4,5,Δ11,12(Z)-sphingosine, cholesterol stearate, thymine, cholesterol, N,N-dimethylurea, urea and stearic acid.
