[Source] Medicinal material source: the dry bark, root bark and branch bark of Magnolia officinalis of the Orchidaceae family.

[Original form] Deciduous tree, up to 24m tall. The bark is light gray. The twigs are stout, green when young, brown later, and the buds are cylindrical, gray-green; there are 5-9 leaves clustered at the top of the stem; the petiole is stout, 4-7cm long, with a prominent stipule scar, about two-thirds the length of the petiole; the leaf blade is hard and papery, obovate or oblong-obovate, 30-50cm long, 20-25cm wide, entire, broadly rounded at the apex with a short acute tip, slightly cordate at the base, green and shiny above, pale beneath, covered with brown hairs, with 28-30 pairs of veins. The leaves open after flowering, are fragrant and large; the perianth is 9-12, with 3 outer petals, green on the back with a slight pink tint, pink on the ventral side, curled outwards, and the inner two petals are white; the stamens are purple-red, and the connectives extend out into triangular points; the pistils are cylindrical. The aggregate fruit is cylindrical, 11-18 cm long, with the tip of the follicle curved outward and the beak 6-8 mm long. The seeds are flat, about 7mm long. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruiting period is September-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in mountain broad-leaved forests at an altitude of 400-2800m.

【Properties】 Identification of properties: The dry skin is in a roll shape, 0.4-1.5cm thick. The outer surface is grayish yellow, nearly smooth, with transverse oval or quasi-circular lenticels; the inner surface is dark brown, nearly smooth, with fine longitudinal lines, and slightly oily when scratched by fingernails. It is hard and not easy to break. The cross section is fibrous, with a large number of white crystalline particles, shining like stars in the light. It has a fragrant aroma and tastes spicy and slightly bitter. The root bark is mostly irregular and often curved. It is hard and has a fibrous cross section. The bark of the branches is mostly single-tube-shaped, thin and brittle.

[Chemical composition] The peel contains honokiol, mag-nolol, magnocurarine, volatile oil, and the oil contains β-eudesmol.

[Preparation] 1. Wash and soak the raw Yunpu herbs, unfold them, scrape off the rough skin, cut into strips, and dry them in the sun.

【Functions and indications】Warms the middle and eliminates dampness; promotes the flow of Qi and eliminates accumulation. Mainly used for chest and abdominal distension and pain; food stagnation and qi stagnation; vomiting; diarrhea; cough with phlegm
