[Source] Medicinal material source: the stems and roots of the Akebia family plants Nateng or Nateng caudex.

[Original form] 1. An evergreen vine. Palmate compound leaves are alternate; petiole is long; leaflets are 3-7, petiolules are 3cm long; leaflets are oblong to oblong, leathery, with short acuminate apex, rounded base, 4-9cm long, 2-2.5cm wide, entire, smooth above, whitish below. The raceme or umbel inflorescence consists of 3-7 flowers, monoecious; the flower diameter is 1.5-2cm, white, light pink or with a blue lotus halo; the male flowers have 3 outer sepals, broadly lanceolate, about 13mm long, 3 inner sepals, linear, slightly long, and 6 stamens; the female flowers are larger and fewer in number, with 3 inner sepals, lanceolate and shorter than those in the outer ones, 6 reduced stamens, and mature carpels ovate and purple. The berries are oval, red, 6-7cm long, with white flesh and many black seeds. The flowering period is May, and the fruiting period is September-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: 1. Grown on the edge of valley forests or in thickets at the foot of mountains, and also cultivated in gardens.

[Chemical composition] The flowers contain cyanidin-3-xyloglucoside, chrysanthemin, quercitrin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, kaempferol glycoside, etc. The callus culture of the stems produced oleanolic acid, akebonoic acid, 3-epiaketonoic acid, quinatic acid, 3β-hydroxy-29-al-olean-l2-en-28-oic acid, mesembryanthemoidigenic acid, β-amyrin, erythrodiol, 3-epi-oleanolic acid, 3-O-acetyloleanolic acid, 24-methylenecycloartanol, stiginasterol and campesterol.

【Meridian】 Liver; Bladder

【Functions and indications】Dispel wind and blood stasis; relieve pain; promote diuresis and reduce swelling. It is mainly used for rheumatic pain, traumatic injury, various neuralgic pains, urinary incontinence, and edema.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 15-30g; or make into pills or powder.
