[Other names] Bell grass (Handbook of Commonly Used Chinese Herbal Medicines in Qinghai), Numb grass (Hunan Materia Medica).

[Source] The leaves of the Solanaceae plant Scopolamine are harvested after the beginning of summer and dried in the sun.

[Properties] Most of the dried leaves are wrinkled and broken. The intact ones are oblong or triangular-ovate, about 26 cm long and 10 cm wide, with pointed tips and irregular pinnate-shaped leaf margins. The lobes are triangular, dark green above and light gray-green below, densely covered with hairs, and more hairs on the main veins. A substance secreted by glandular hairs that is sticky when the leaves are not very dry. The best leaves are green, densely hairy, dry and free of impurities.

[Chemical composition] Scopolamine leaves contain 20% ash and 0.045-0.14% total bioalkaloids, mainly hyoscyamine, scopolamine and atropine; it also contains a bitter glycoside called hyoscyamine.

[Properties and flavors] "Selected Chinese Herbal Medicines from Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Qinghai": "bitter, cold, and highly toxic."

【Functions and indications】Analgesic, antispasmodic. Treat stomachache, toothache, bronchitis and cough.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral administration: grind into powder, 3-5 cl; make into tincture or extract. The fluid extract can be mixed into tobacco leaves and burned and smoked.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of bronchitis: Grind equal parts of Scopolamine leaves, Tripterygium wilfordii and Diamond bone into powder. Take 1.5 fen each time. (Inner Mongolia Chinese Herbal Medicine)
