[Source] This product is the dried mature seeds of Strychnos nuxvomica L., a plant of the Loganaceae family . Harvest the ripe fruits in winter, remove the seeds and dry them.

[Properties] This product is button-shaped and disc-shaped, often with one side raised and the other side slightly concave, with a diameter of 1.5 to 3 cm and a thickness of 0.3 to 0.6 cm. The surface is densely covered with gray-brown or gray-green silky hairs, which are arranged radiating from the center to the surrounding areas and have a silky luster. The edge is slightly raised, thick, with a protruding micropyle, and a protruding dot-shaped hilum in the center of the bottom. The texture is hard, and the parallel section shows pale yellowish-white endosperm, which is horny, and the cotyledons are heart-shaped with 5 to 7 veins. Odorless, tastes extremely bitter.

Non-glandular hairs are single-celled, with a swollen base resembling a stone cell, and extremely thick walls that are often broken and lignified. The endosperm cells are polygonal, with thick walls, and contain fatty oil and starch grains.
