Today I will introduce to you the medicinal herb Ji Gan San.

[Other names] Blackhead grass (Selected Chinese Herbal Medicines in Simao, Yunnan), Smilax glabra (Honghe Chinese Herbal Medicine), Elsholtzia yunnanensis, Artemisia annua (Selected Chinese Herbal Medicines in Yunnan).

[Source] It is the whole herb of Artemisia tetragonum of the Lamiaceae family. Harvested in summer, autumn or early winter, used fresh or dried in the shade.

[Original form] Annual herb, 1 to 1.5 meters tall, the whole plant has fragrance. The stem is quadrangular, slightly pubescent, and woody at the base. The leaves are simple and opposite, elliptic-lanceolate to lanceolate, 7-16 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, with serrations on the margin above the middle, entire near the base, and gradually narrowing to the petiole, more or less hairy on the upper side, and glabrous on the lower side except for the veins. The cymes are arranged in pseudospikes, terminal or axillary; the bracts are subulate; the flowers are small, white, densely distributed on one side of the rachis; the calyx has 5 teeth; the corolla has 2 lips, and the nutlets are dark brown and small.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on hillsides, wilderness, and roadside grass. Distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi and other places.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, pungent, cool.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, reduces inflammation and relieves pain. Treat pyelonephritis, nephritis, colds, hepatitis, dysentery, enteritis, toothache, conjunctivitis, and traumatic bleeding.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decoct in water, 1 to 3 qian; grind into powder or mash into juice; or stew with meat. For external use: mash into juice and apply or grind into powder and sprinkle on it.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of pyelonephritis and nephritis: Grind Elsholtzia yunnanensis into powder, one to two qian. Take with warm water, twice a day. One course of treatment is four weeks.
