[Source] It is the root and rhizome of Gerbera pubescens, a plant of the Asteraceae family. Dig up in summer and autumn, remove mud and sand from stems and leaves, and dry them in the sun.

[Habitat distribution] Produced in Yunnan, Guizhou and other places.

[Properties] Dry roots and rhizomes, 7 to 10 cm long. The rhizome is cylindrical, 1 to 3 cm long and about 4 mm in diameter; the upper end is thick, with a brown and dry petiole base and grayish-white wool; the rhizome is dark brown in appearance, rough and wrinkled, and surrounded by many complete or broken fibrous roots; it is hard, with an uneven, fibrous, light yellow fracture surface, a thin cortex, a larger pith, a radial vascular portion, and a medulla in the center. The fibrous roots are slender, about 1 to 1.5 mm in diameter, and light yellowish brown; they are brittle and easy to break, with white bark and light yellow wood. It has a slightly burnt smell and a bitter taste.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, neutral.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, detoxifies, regulates Qi and harmonizes blood. It is used to treat carbuncle, eczema, mumps, scrofula, tuberculosis, chest and flank distension, hernia, dysentery, epistaxis, and bleeding.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 2 to 3 qian. For external use: mash and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat children's lung and stomach heat, red and swollen cheeks and painful rash, fever and headache: 2 qian of small arrow root, 2 qian of Forsythia suspensa, 1 qian of red peony root. Take with some water or wine. (Compendium of Materia Medica in Southern Yunnan)
