[Source] Medicinal material source: It is the root of the Asteraceae plant Membranaceus chinensis.

[Original form] Membrane-margined Sichuan costusroot is a perennial herb. The main root is cylindrical, slender, and about 1 cm in diameter. The stem is extremely short. Leaves are alternate, numerous, flat and rosette-shaped; leaf blades are hard and papery; basal leaves are petiolate, 2-7 (-12) cm long, leaf blades are ovate or shortly circular, 10-15 cm long, 8-11 cm wide, base broadly cuneate, pinnate-umbrella-shaped, with 5-7 pairs of lobes, broadly triangular or narrow, with a regular tooth on the margin, with small thorn-like tips at the tooth end, and covered with rough hairs on both sides; upper leaves are bract-shaped, smaller, pinnate-cleft or undivided. There are many capitulum inflorescences, 3-6 densely packed, ovate, 3.5-4cm long, 2-2.5cm wide, with a 1-2cm long peduncle round, without hairs, the outer layer ovate, about 6mm wide, the inner layer oblong-lanceolate; the corolla is purple, tubular, about 3.5cm long, and the tube is slender. Achenes are cylindrical with tubercle-like protrusions on the upper part; pappus has 2-3 layers of bristle-like hairs, about 2 cm long, and yellowish brown. Flowering and fruiting period is July to October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in valleys and hillsides, meadows, algae, forest edges or under coniferous forests or in rock cracks at an altitude of 3000-4100m.
