[Source] Medicinal material source: The root bark of Acanthopanax acanthopanax of the Araliaceae family.

[Original morphology] Shrub; twigs purple, with short thorns, 1.5-3mm long, base decurrent, tip hooked. The leaves have 3-5 leaflets; the petiole is 3-12cm long, glabrous, with fine spines; the leaflets are obovate to broadly elliptic, 7-11cm long, 3-4.5cm wide, acuminate to short acuminate at the apex, cuneate to broadly cuneate at the base, green above, sparsely bristled along the veins, light green to gray-green below, glabrous, with irregularly double serrated edges, teeth with spines, and 6-8 pairs of lateral veins; the petiolules are 1-10mm long, shorter on both sides. The panicle is terminal, with a slender main axis, 5 cm long and with fine hairs; the umbels are whorled on the main axis, with no peduncle except the terminal ones, and 10-20 flowers; the peduncle is 1 cm long and with fine soft hairs; the pedicel is 1-1.4 cm long and with fine soft hairs; the calyx teeth are 5, triangular, with cilia on the edges; the petals are 5, triangular, with soft hairs inside; the stamens are 5; the ovary is 5-chambered; the styles are 5, almost free. The fruit is spherical, 5mm in diameter, and has 5 edges. The flowering period is June-July, and the fruiting period is July-August.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing on hillsides or jungles at an altitude of 2900-3200m.

【Nature and flavor】 Spicy; slightly bitter; warm

【Functions and indications】Dispel rheumatism; strengthen tendons and bones; nourish the kidney and promote blood circulation. Mainly used for rheumatic joint pain; weakness of muscles and bones in children; impotence; traumatic injury

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g; or soaked in wine. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application; or decoct it in water for bathing.
