The efficacy and function of the bark of elm

The efficacy and function of the bark of elm

For many Chinese people, traditional Chinese medicine is very trustworthy because it has a long history and few side effects. Chubaipi is a common Chinese medicinal material, which has many benefits for human health. So how can we eat Chubaipi? Let’s learn about it below.

[Other names] Chuanxi bark (Rihuazi Materia Medica), Ailanthus altissima bark (Southern Yunnan Materia Medica), Ailanthus truncatus bark (Shaanxi Chinese Materia Medica).

[Source] It is the inner bark of the root or stem of Ailanthus altissima . Harvested in spring, dig up the tree roots, scrape off the outer rough bark, gently beat it with a wooden stick to loosen the bark and wood, then peel off the inner bark and dry it on its back in the sun; or peel off the dry bark.

[Original form] Ailanthus altissima (Qunfangpu), also known as: stinking paper mulberry (Dietary Materia Medica), mountain toon, tiger eye (Bencao Shiyi), tiger eye tree (Four Tones Materia Medica), ghost eye (Bencao Tujing), big-eyed tung (Compendium of Materia Medica), catalpa ovata, white toon.

【Habitat distribution】 Distributed in most parts of the country.

[Properties] ① White bark of the root of Catalpa ovata (Jinxiao Fang), also known as the root bark of Catalpa ovata (Bencao Shiyi).

[Chemical composition] The root bark contains azadirachtin, tannin, ochre, etc. The bark contains ailanthus ketone, ailanthus lactone, acetyl ailanthus lactone, quasin, neoquasin, etc. The seeds contain about 35% oil and 2,6-dimethoxyquinone, Ailanthus ketone, Ailanthus lactone, chaparenone, quassin, etc. The leaves contain isoquercetin, vitamin C, etc.

[Preparation] Chubai Cortex: Remove the cork bark, soak in clean water, take out, soak thoroughly, cut into strips or cubes in time, and dry in the sun. Stir-fry the white bark of Chuanxiong: first sprinkle the bran into the pot and heat it until smoke rises, then pour the Chuanxiong bark in and stir-fry until both sides are browned, take it out, sieve out the bran, and let it cool. (For every 100 catties of bark, use 10 catties of bran)

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, cold.

[entry into meridians] Enters the stomach and large intestine meridians.

【Functions and indications】Removing heat, drying dampness, astringing the intestines, stopping bleeding, and killing insects. It is used to treat chronic dysentery, chronic diarrhea, intestinal wind and bloody stool, metrorrhagia, leucorrhea, spermatorrhea, leukorrhea, and roundworms.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 2 to 4 qian; grind into powder or make into pills or powder. For external use: decoct in water for washing or make ointment for application.

【Note】 "Compendium of Materia Medica" states: "It should not be used by people with spleen and stomach deficiency and coldness. It should also be avoided by people with metrorrhagia and true yin deficiency of the kidney, because it is dry. It should not be used immediately by people with stagnant and accumulated qi."

[Additional prescription] ① Treat dysentery: 1 liang of bark of Chinese toon (Eleutherodactyla chinensis), 3 qian of Acanthus paniculata, and 5 qian of Herba Phragmites australis. Decoction. (Jiangxi Journal of Chinese Herbal Medicine)

【Explanations by various scholars】 "Compendium of Materia Medica": "The bark of the white elm is used to consolidate and restrain, so it is used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, intestinal wind, turbidity and metrorrhagia. However, it is only suitable for patients with a long-term illness and slippery. If it is taken too early for a new illness, it will force the patient to consolidate and restrain, and it will inevitably change into other symptoms and become a chronic disease. When using it, scrape off the rough bark and use it raw to promote bowel movements, and roast it with vinegar to consolidate and restrain."

【Clinical application】 ①Treatment of acute bacillary dysentery

[Remarks] Catalpa ovata (stinking toon) and Toona sinensis (fragrant toon) are two plants from different families, but they are often described together in the "Compendium of Materia Medica" of successive dynasties. Commercial products also often refer to Catalpa ovata bark and Toona sinensis bark as "Toona white bark" or "Toona root bark", probably because the functions of the two are basically the same. The most widely used one at present is Chuanbaibark, which is only used alone in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Hubei, Guizhou and other places, or both Chuanbaibark and Chuanbaibark are used. See the entry for "Chun Baipi".

【Excerpt】 《*Dictionary》

[Source] From "Medicine Properties"; 1. "Compendium of Materia Medica": The shapes of Chinese toon and Chinese catalpa are similar, but the leaves of Chinese toon are solid and edible, while the leaves of Chinese catalpa are sparse and have a foul smell, and cooks can also boil them to remove the smell. People in the north call the tree "shanchun", and people in Jiangdong call it "guimu". Where the leaves fall off, there are marks like those of a tree or eyes, hence the name.
