[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Veronica odorata of the Scrophulariaceae family.

[Original form] Veronica pubescens is a perennial herb, 10-70cm tall. The stem is solitary or multi-branched, erect or ascending, densely covered with short, upward curls. Leaves are opposite; sessile or the lower leaves have very short petioles; leaf blades are ovate, oblong or lanceolate, 1.5-4cm long, 0.2-2cm wide, with deep blunt teeth on the edges and sparsely covered with short hairs. The racemes are laterally borne in the leaf axils at the top of the stem, with 2-4 branches, extending up to 12cm in fruiting period, with the inflorescence axis and pedicels curled; the pedicels are equal in length or slightly longer than the bracts, extending up to 1cm in fruiting period; the calyx is 5-lobed, the lobes are lanceolate, obtuse at the apex, about 5mm long, with short eyelashes; the corolla is bright blue, pink or white, 6-7mm long, the lobes are ovate or broadly ovate, and obtuse at the apex. The capsule is obcordate-ovate, slightly flat, 4-6mm long, glabrous, and the style is 5-6mm long and curved. Seeds oval, numerous. Flowering period is from May to July.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grown in sparse woods and grasslands.

[Chemical composition] The whole herb contains 4-methoxyscutellarein-7-OD-glucoside, 6-hydroxyluteolin-7-OD-glucoside, 6-hydroxyluteolin-7-O-diglucoside, cosmosiin and cynaroside [1].

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; slightly spicy; cold

【Functions and indications】Dispel wind and clear away heat; promote diuresis and relieve stranguria. Mainly for exogenous wind-heat; rheumatism-heat arthralgia; damp-heat stranguria

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 10-15g.

[Discussions by various scholars] "Xinhua Compendium of Materia Medica": It has the functions of clearing away heat, detoxifying, dispelling wind and dampness. Used for rheumatic pain, influenza, and urethritis.
