[Alias] Five-thrift vine, hillside melon vine, river-blocking vine, blood-scattering dragon, square-stem wide-tendon vine, six-bone spring-tendon vine, tendon vine, soft tendon beauty, soft tendon vine, and compound vine.

[Source] Medicinal material source: The vine stem of the plant Vitis idaeus.

[Original form] Pteris sphagnum climbing shrub, 3-7m high. The twigs are stout, with 6 wing-like ridges, pale yellow when dry, often contracted at the nodes; the tendrils are unbranched, opposite the leaves, glabrous, and up to 10 cm long. Simple leaves are alternate; petiole is 2-6cm long; leaf blade is papery, ovate-triangular, 6-10cm long, 4.5-8cm wide, with abrupt narrowing and acuminate tip, nearly truncated base, obtuse or slightly cordate, and with sparse small teeth on the margin. The umbel is opposite to the leaves, with short stalks, 2-4 cm long, and composed of cymes; the pedicels are 3-7 mm long, with papillate pubescence; the calyx is cup-shaped, glabrous; the petals are oblong, 2.5-3 mm long; there are 4 stamens; the disk is wavy and shallowly lobed with 4 lobes; the ovary is 2-chambered and glabrous. The berries are oval, about 9mm long and 6-7mm wide. Contains 1 seed. The flowering period is from September to November, and the fruiting period is from October to February of the following year.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in sparse forests in mountains.

[Cultivation] Biological characteristics: It prefers high temperature and semi-shaded environment and is afraid of severe cold. When the monthly average temperature is above 25℃, the growth is rapid; when the monthly average temperature is below 15℃ and the absolute low temperature is 9-4℃, the growth gradually stagnates. In case of short-term frost, the growth also gradually stagnates, because in case of short-term frost, the growing points and young leaves are damaged and wither. It is not very demanding on soil and is best grown on fertile, well-drained sandy loam.
