[Original form] Shrub or small tree, 1.5-6m high. The twigs are sparsely covered with numerous fine thorns, 1-3 mm long, with enlarged bases; young branches often have slender straight thorns, up to 1.5 cm long. The leaves are two to three pinnate compound leaves, 40-80cm long; the petiole is 20-40cm long; the stipules and petiole are fused at the base, the separated part is linear, about 3mm long, and the edges are hairy; the pinna has 7-11 leaflets, with a pair of leaflets at the base, the leaf blade is ovate to ovate-elliptical, 5-15cm long, 2.5-8cm wide, with acuminate apex, rounded to cordate base, rarely cuneate, green above, gray-green below. Umbel diameter 1-1.5cm; peduncle 0.8-4cm long, pedicel about 7mm long, all densely pubescent; bracts and bracteoles lanceolate, membranous; flowers yellow-white; calyx glabrous, about 1.5mm long, 5-lobed at apex, lobes ovate-triangular; petals equal in length to calyx, ovate-triangular, recurved in flowering; stamens 5; ovary inferior, 5-chambered, styles 5, free or fused at base. The drupe is spherical, berry-like, black, 4mm in diameter, and has 5 ribs. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from September to October.

Subcutaneous injection of 1.25-5 mg/kg in mice can significantly reduce the anesthetic effects of chloral hydrate, sodium barbital, etc. on animals. 15 mg/kg total triterpenoid saponins also has a significant effect on lowering blood sugar and blood β-lipoprotein in rats, but has no effect on cholesterol levels.
