Simple leaves are alternate; petiole is 8-15mm long; leaf blade is leathery, obovate or elliptical, 5-10cm long, 2.5-6cm wide, gradually pointed and blunt, base is cuneate, edge has fine serrations, dark green and shiny above, light green below, glabrous on both sides, leaves turn yellow when dry. The flowers are bisexual, solitary or opposite in the leaf axils or branch tops, bright red, 5-8cm in diameter; there are 5 sepals, broadly ovate, covered with white soft hairs on the outside; there are 5-7 petals, and the cultivated varieties have multiple petals, white, light red and other colors, the petals are nearly round, with a notch at the tip and slightly fused at the base; there are many stamens, the outer filaments are fused at the base, attached to the base of the petals, and free on the inside; the ovary is superior, glabrous, and the style has 3 lobes at the tip. The gourd fruit is nearly spherical, with a diameter of 2.2-3.2cm, thick, smooth and hairless peel, and dehiscent chambers. The seeds are nearly spherical, angular, 1.88-2.5cm long, and dark brown. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruiting period is September-October.
