[Source] This product is the dried mature seeds of Areca catechu L., a plant of the palm family. The ripe fruits are harvested from late spring to early autumn, boiled in water, dried, the peel removed, the seeds taken out, and dried.

[Properties] This product is oblate spherical or conical, 1.5 to 3.5 cm high and 1.5 to 3 cm in bottom diameter. The surface is light yellow-brown or light reddish-brown, with slightly concave reticular grooves, a circular sunken micropyle in the center of the bottom, and an obvious scar-like hilum next to it. It is hard and not easy to break. The cross section shows a marble-like pattern of alternating brown seed coat and white endosperm. It has a faint smell and tastes astringent and slightly bitter.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of this product: The seed coat tissue is divided into inner and outer layers. The outer layer is composed of several rows of tangentially elongated flat stone cells containing reddish-brown substances. The stone cells vary in shape and size and often have intercellular spaces. The inner layer is composed of several rows of thin-walled cells containing brownish-red substances and a few scattered vascular bundles. The endosperm is relatively narrow, and the inner layer of the seed coat and the endosperm are often inserted into the endosperm to form an intercalated tissue; the endosperm cells are white, polygonal, thick-walled, with large pits, and contain oil droplets and starch grains.
