Gentiana scabra, a traditional Chinese medicine, is the dried root and rhizome of Gentiana scabra, Gentiana scabra, Gentiana triflora or Gentiana scabra of the Gentianaceae family. The first three types are commonly known as "Gentian" and the last type is commonly known as "Jian Longdan". Gentiana is 1-2 feet tall. The leaves are opposite, the lower 2-3 pairs of leaves are very small and scaly, the middle and upper leaves are lanceolate, dark green on the surface, light green on the back, with three obvious veins and no petioles. The flowers grow in the axils of leaves at the tips of branches or near the tips, and are blue tubular bell-shaped. The fruit is oblong and slightly flat, splitting into two lobes when ripe, and contains many, very small seeds. The rhizome is short, with clusters of numerous slender roots, which are light yellowish brown or light yellow.

Medicinal value of gentian:

1. To treat madness caused by typhoid fever: grind grass gentian into powder, add egg white and white honey, dissolve in cold water and take 2 qian of it. (Essentials of Cold Damage)

2. Treat liver and gallbladder meridians with damp-heat due to excess fire, side pain and deafness, bile overflow and bitter taste in the mouth, tendon atrophy, genital sweating, genital swelling, genital pain, and leukoturbid hematuria: Gentiana scabra (fried with wine), Scutellaria baicalensis (fried), Gardenia jasminoides (fried with wine), Alisma orientalis, Akebia trifoliata, Plantago seed, Angelica sinensis (washed with wine), Rehmannia root (fried with wine), Bupleurum chinense, and Licorice root (raw). 3. To treat night blindness and blindness: 1 liang of Gentiana scabra and 1 liang of Coptis chinensis. Grind the two ingredients into fine powder and take it with hot sheep liver after meals. (Lu Canyan Materia Medica)

To treat jaundice, dizziness after eating, uneasiness and yellowing of the skin, caused by overeating without hunger and stomach upset: take 3 liang of Sophora flavescens, 1 he of Gentiana scabra, ox gall pills as big as a seed, take 5 pills with raw wheat juice, 3 times a day. 7. To treat sore throat: Take a handful of gentian, mash it into juice, and drink it by gurgling. (Compendium of Materia Medica)

8. Medical treatment for persistent bleeding: take a handful of Gentiana scabra. Cut it, boil it with five liters of water and take out two and a half liters. Divide it into five doses. If there is no improvement, take more. (Yao Sengtan's Collection of Proven Prescriptions)

9. For the treatment of night sweats after typhoid fever, or all kinds of night sweats in women and children, this medicine is suitable: roast and dry any amount of gentian, grind it into fine powder, take one large coin of it each time, add three liang of pig bile, and add a little warm wine, mix well, take on an empty stomach before going to bed. 10. Treats itching or rupture of the kidney sac, with water discharge, also known as hydrangea wind: bitter gentian, frosted peach leaves, beehive, Veratrum, and thousand sheets of paper. Grind into fine powder and apply with sesame oil. (Compendium of Materia Medica in Southern Yunnan)
