Leaves are opposite, usually 4 pieces grow on the upper part of the stem; petiole is 0.5-1.2cm long; scale leaves are ovate-triangular; stipules are small and subulate; leaf blade is papery, broadly elliptic to obovate, 9-18cm long, 5-9cm wide, acuminate at the apex, cuneate to broadly cuneate at the base, with serrated margins and a gland at the end of the teeth, and scaly hairs on the midrib and lateral veins on the back; there are 6-8 pairs of veins. The spike inflorescence is terminal, usually bifurcated or racemose, with the peduncle 10-16cm long; the bracts are usually broadly ovate-triangular or nearly semicircular; the flowers are white; there are 3 stamens, almost separated at the base, the central connective is 3mm long, with 1 2-chambered anther, and 1 1-chambered anther on each side of the connective; the anther chamber is at the base of the connective; the ovary is ovate, without style, and the stigma is capitate. The drupe is spherical, flowering period is April-June, and fruiting period is July-August.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in shady wetlands and thickets under forests on hillsides.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The rhizome is short and thick, irregular short cylindrical, with many round concave stem scars or residual stem bases on the top; the surface is dark brown, surrounded by densely growing and curved fine roots, with a root diameter of about 1mm; the surface is gray-brown or gray-yellow.
