[Source] Medicinal material source: The bark of Cinnamomum cassia, a plant of the Lauraceae family.

[Original form] Ceylon cinnamon is an evergreen tree, up to 10m tall. The bark is dark brown and the inner bark has a strong cinnamaldehyde aroma. The branches are slightly quadrangular, gray with white spots. Leaves are opposite or nearly opposite; petiole is 2cm long, glabrous; leaf blade is ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 11-16cm long, 4.5-5.5cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, entire, green and shiny above, light green-white below, glabrous on both sides, three-veined from base, midrib and lateral veins raised on both sides of the leaf, reticulate veins are honeycomb-shaped below, leathery or nearly leathery. The panicles are axillary and terminal, 10-12cm long, and covered with silky pubescence; the bisexual flowers are about 6mm long and yellow; the perianth tube is obconical, with 6 perianth lobes, oblong, and covered with gray pubescence on the outside; there are 9 fertile stamens, 4 anther chambers, and hairy at the base of the filaments. The anther chambers of the 1st and 2nd whorls of stamens are inward-dehiscent, and the filaments are glandless; the anther chambers of the 3rd whorl of stamens are inward-dehiscent, and there is a pair of glands at the base of the filaments; the ovary is ovate, glabrous, the style is short, and the stigma is disc-shaped. The fruit is oval, 10-15mm long, black; the fruit is cup-shaped, with teeth, and the tips of the teeth are truncated or acute.

【Habitat distribution】Ecological environment: native to Sri Lanka.

【Cultivation】 1. Biological characteristics: It is native to tropical areas and requires high temperature and high humidity habitat conditions.

[Properties] 1. Identification of properties: The bark of the branch is often 7-12 or more layers of thin sheets overlapping and rolled into a slender reeled tube, up to 60 cm long, about 1 cm wide, and each sheet is about 0.5 mm thick. The outer surface is yellow-brown and flat, with visible wavy vertical and horizontal stripes, occasional scars and holes (where the branches extend); the inner surface is darker in color. It has a fragrant smell and sweet taste.

[Chemical composition] The bark contains volatile oil. The volatile oil in the bark from the origin contains 45%-65% cinnamaldehyde and 12%-18% eugenol. The volatile oil in the bark from the introduction site (Xishuangbanna) contains 46.5% cinnamaldehyde and very little eugenol.

[Pharmacological action] 1. Anti-ulcer effect: Sri Lankan cinnamon water extract, administered orally at 0.5g (raw drug)/kg and 2.5g (raw drug)/kg body weight for 3 consecutive days, has an inhibitory effect on the formation of water-immersion stress ulcers in mice.

[Toxicity] The LD50 of Sri Lankan cinnamon water extract administered orally to mice is 51.8±3.0g (raw drug)/kg body weight. After administration, the mice showed fatigue and less activity, loose fur, muscle weakness, disappearance of righting reflex, weak breathing, and dead mice were mostly in prone position. No obvious abnormalities were found in the organs after autopsy.

【Functions and indications】Warming the middle and strengthening the stomach; relieving pain. Mainly used for abdominal distension, indigestion, diarrhea, abdominal pain, cold hernia pain

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water 2-5g (do not decoct for a long time); grind into powder and take, 0.5-1.5g.
