[Original form] Big wolf grass is an annual herb, up to 120cm tall, with erect, branched stems, often purple, sparsely hairy or hairless. Leaves opposite; petiolate; once pinnately compound, with 3-5 leaflets, lanceolate, 3-10cm long, 1-3cm wide, acuminate at apex, coarsely serrated at margin, usually sparsely pubescent on the back, at least the terminal ones with obvious petioles. The flower head is solitary, with a diameter of 12-15mm together with the bracts, and about 12mm high; the involucre is campanulate or hemispherical, with 5-10 outer bracts, usually 8, lanceolate or spoon-shaped oblanceolate, leaf-like, with ciliate edges, inner bracts oblong with light yellow edges, ligulate flowers are rudimentary and extremely inconspicuous, tubular flowers are trifoliate, and the corolla has 5 lobes. Achenes are flat, narrowly cuneate, 5-10mm long, with two awns at the tip and lateral hairs. Flowering and fruiting period is August to October.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in moist places in fields. There are wild ones in the suburbs of Shanghai. Symptoms of northern origin.

【Properties】 Characteristic identification: The stem is dark purple. The leaves are opposite, and the complete leaves open into pinnate compound leaves, with lanceolate leaflets and coarse serrations on the margins. The head inflorescence is solitary at the end of the stem or branch; the involucre is bell-shaped or hemispherical; the bracts are leaf-like with ciliate edges; the corolla has 5 lobes at the apex. Tastes bitter.

[Chemical composition] Big wolf grass contains trideca-3,5,7.9-te-trayn-11-en-1,2,13-trlol-1-glucoside.

【Functions and indications】Tonify deficiency and clear away heat. Weakness and fatigue; night sweats; hemoptysis; infantile malnutrition; dysentery
