[Original form] Perennial woody vine, up to 20-30m long. The stems and branches are thick, with longitudinal ridges and grooves, and are glabrous. Leaves are alternate; petioles are stout, 4-8cm long, with longitudinal stripes; petioles are 2-5-branched and smooth; leaf blades are thick leathery, 3-5 deeply lobed, with the middle lobe shallowly lobed or sometimes undivided; both length and width are 15-24cm, lobes are ovate-oblong, with the middle lobe larger and the lateral lobes smaller, glossy green on the upper side and smooth and hairless on both sides; there are 3-5 main veins, which are raised on the back. Dioecious; male flowers in racemes, inflorescence axis 15-30cm; bracts oblong-lanceolate, fleshy, pedicels thick and short, smooth or pubescent; calyx tube tubular, light yellow; corolla radial, yellow outside, white inside, 5-lobed, lobes about 5cm long, apex fringed, up to 15cm long; stamens 3, filaments not obvious, anthers close together; female flowers solitary; pedicels strong, short; ovary nearly spherical, with 12 embryos, pubescent outside, long style, stigma 3, apex 2-lobed. The fruit is large, oblate, about 20 cm in diameter and 10-16 cm thick; light reddish brown, with 12 grooves, velvety red, and 6 large seeds (the other 6 are sterile). The seeds are oblong, about 7 cm long and up to 3 cm wide. Flowering and fruiting period is from June to October.
