[Original morphology] The body is elongated and ribbon-shaped, very laterally flattened, with the dorsal and ventral edges of the front part of the body almost parallel, gradually tapering towards the tail. The body length is about 70 cm. The head is long and narrow, with a sharp front. The widest part on the back is between the eyes. The sides are flat, the belly is narrow, and the snout is long and pointed. The eyes are of medium size, high in position, with the upper edge of the eyes reaching the back edge of the head. The interocular distance is flat and the center is slightly concave. The nostrils are small, one on each side, oblong in shape, and located in front of the eyes. The mouth is large and not tilted, with the posterior edge of the mouth reaching below the eye. The lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. The teeth are well developed, with two pairs of large canines at the front end of the upper jaw, with barbs at the tips, which can be embedded in the mandibular fossa when the mouth is closed; there are two pairs of canines at the front end of the lower jaw, which are smaller than those in the upper jaw and exposed outside the mouth when the mouth is closed. There is a row of flattened and sharp teeth on each side of the upper and lower jaws. The tongue and vomer are toothless. Gill rakers short and thin, irregular in size. The body is smooth and scaleless, the lateral line is complete, and there is a significant bend above the pectoral fin, folding toward the ventral side, forming a nearly straight line along the ventral edge backwards. Dorsal fin long, 130 to 144 cm, starting in front of the upper corner of the gill opening, almost along the entire length of the dorsal margin. Anal fin 107-113, with only the tip of the spine exposed. Pectoral fins short and pointed, 11 to 12 in length, positioned relatively low. No pelvic fins. The tail is long, tapering towards the back and ending in a whip-like shape. The body is silvery white, and the dorsal and pectoral fins are light grey with tiny black spots. The tail is black.

[Habitat distribution] It lives in the middle and lower water layers of the open sea and has migratory habits. It is widely distributed in my country from the Yellow Sea, Bohai Sea to the South China Sea.

[Chemical composition] Every 100 grams of edible part contains 74 grams of water, 18.1 grams of protein, 7.4 grams of fat, 1.1 grams of ash, 24 milligrams of calcium, 160 milligrams of phosphorus, 1.1 milligrams of iron, 0.01 milligrams of thiamine, 0.09 milligrams of riboflavin, and 1.9 milligrams of niacin. Fresh hairtail contains 80 micrograms of iodine per kilogram. Contains 50 international units of vitamin A per 100 grams.
