[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Viola odorata, a plant of the Violaceae family.

[Original form] Violandorata L. is a perennial herb, 3-15cm high. No above-ground stem, with creeping branches. The rhizome is relatively thick, vertical or oblique, light brown, densely covered with nodules, with many fine roots growing downwards and slender creeping branches growing horizontally. New plants form at the nodes with roots and leaves growing. Leaves are basal; the leaves are round or reniform to broadly ovate-cordate. The leaves are smaller during the flowering period, with a length and width of 1.5-2.5 cm. After flowering, the leaves gradually increase in size, up to 4.5 cm in length and width, with a rounded or slightly pointed tip, a deeply cordate base, and rounded and blunt teeth on the edges. Both surfaces are sparsely pubescent or nearly glabrous. The flowers are large, dark purple and fragrant; the pedicels are slender, with two slender bracts in the middle or above the middle; the sepals are round or oblong-ovate, obtuse at the apex, and the base appendages are very short; the petals have rounded and wavy edges, the inside of the lateral petals have short hairs near the base, and the spur of the lower petals is 1.5-2cm long; the spurs are straight and slightly curved; the spurs of the two stamens below are shorter; the ovary is covered with fine soft hairs, and the top of the style is curved into a short hooked beak, with a thinner stigma hole at the end of the beak. Capsule spherical, densely covered with short soft hairs.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: It is cultivated in many major cities in my country, and is more common in Beijing, Tianjin, Xi'an, Taiwan, Shanghai, Guangdong, etc.

【Nature and flavor】 Spicy, slightly bitter, cool

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind and clear heat; relieve cough and eliminate phlegm; calm; stop diarrhea. Mainly used for colds and coughs; whooping cough; hysteria; insomnia; diarrhea; dysentery

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application.
