[Source] Medicinal material source: the root or root bark of Ulmus pumila of the Betulaceae family.

[Original form] Deciduous tree, up to 15m tall. The bark is gray-brown with shallow scaly fissures; the twigs are reddish-brown, shiny, and have yellow round lenticels. Leaves are alternate; petiole is 1.2-2cm long; leaf blade is elliptical or ovate-elliptical, 6-12cm long, 4-6cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, shallowly cordate at the base, with sharp serrations on the margins, and 17-24 pairs of lateral veins; the young branches, petioles, undersides of leaves, veins and fruit stalks are densely covered with short soft hairs. The flowers are unisexual, yellow-green, and monoecious. The male catkins are axillary, drooping, 5-6cm long, with densely grown flowers and no perianth. The bracts are ovate, with 10 stamens at the base; the female catkins are terminal, about 3cm long, and the inflorescence axis is about 1cm long. The bracts are linear, each containing 2 female flowers, with 3 bracts on each side, forming secondary bracts. When fruiting, they will form fruit bracts. The female flowers have calyx, attached to the ovary, and the stigma is slender and 2-lobed. The infructescence is 5-12cm long and 3-4cm wide; the fruit bract is broadly oval with obvious veins; the nutlets are oval and flattened, covered by densely stacked fruit bracts. The flowering period is May and the fruiting period is September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on shady slopes of mountains or in mixed woods in valleys.
