[Other names] Wild star anise, stone grass

[Source] Medicinal material source: the root and bark of Illicium verum L., a plant of the Illicium family.

[Original form] Evergreen shrub, 1-1.5m high, rarely up to 10m. The roots are thick, reddish-brown, and have a camphor wood aroma. The twigs are slender, brown and wrinkled, and the old branches are grayish white. Simple leaves are alternate, often 3-8 pieces are clustered at the top of branches; petiole is 3-10mm long; leathery or thin leathery, narrowly lanceolate or narrowly oblanceolate, 4-10cm long, 0.8-2cm wide, apex caudate acuminate or acute, base narrow cuneate, entire, slightly rolled after drying, with 8-10 pairs of lateral veins. Flowers are solitary or clustered in 2-3 in leaf axils or near branch tops; pedicels are slender, 1.5-4 cm long; tepals are 12-20, pink or red, the largest one is elliptical or nearly round; stamens are usually 24; carpels are 8-13. The aggregate fruit is 2-2.5 cm in diameter, with 8-11 follicles, solid, with a distinct subulate tip, slightly recurved. The seeds are bright brown and shiny. The flowering period is from April to July, and the fruiting period is from July to October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown beside water in valleys, along river banks, or in the shade and wet places of dense and sparse forests in mountains, and in cracks in rocks.

[Chemical composition] The peel contains 6-deoxypseu-doanisatin, dunnianin and 6-deoxydun-nianin. The stems and leaves contain β-sitosterol, 1-tria-contanol, quercitrin, and shikimic acid.

[Pharmacological action] It has been preliminarily confirmed that shikimic acid in red star anise has a strong analgesic effect and is the analgesic active ingredient of this product. The alcohol extract of safflower and star anise also has a strong analgesic effect, and has a significant inhibitory effect on inflammatory factors such as 5-HT.
