【English name】 RHIZOMA PICRORHIZAE

[Other name] False Coptis chinensis

[Source] This product is the dried rhizome of Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora Pennell, a plant of the Scrophulariaceae family. Dig up in autumn, remove the fibrous roots and mud, and dry in the sun.

[Properties] This product is cylindrical, slightly curved, occasionally branched, 3 to 12 cm long and 0.3 to 1 cm in diameter. The surface is gray-brown to dark brown, rough, with dense ring-shaped nodes, slightly raised bud scars or root scars, and the upper end is densely covered with dark brown scaly petiole residues. It is light, hard and brittle, easy to break, with a slightly flat cross section, light brown to dark brown, and the wood has 4 to 10 off-white dot-like vascular bundles arranged in a ring. It has a faint smell and tastes extremely bitter.

[Identification] (1) Take 0.5 g of the powder of this product, place it in a suitable container, sublimate it at 60-80℃ for 4 hours, and observe it under a microscope. Needle-shaped, needle-cluster-shaped, rod-shaped, plate-shaped crystals and yellow spheres can be seen.

[Processing] Remove impurities, wash, soak thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry or crush before use. This product is an irregular round slice with a gray-black or brown-black cross section, white dot-like vascular bundles, and dark brown surrounding areas. Crisp texture.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, cold.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away damp heat, eliminates bone steaming, and eliminates malnutrition heat. It is used for diarrhea caused by damp-heat, jaundice, hemorrhoids, bone steaming and hot flashes, and malnutrition in children.

【Usage and Dosage】 1.5~9g.

【Storage】 Store in a dry place.

[Remarks] (1) This product can be used in combination with Anemarrhena asphodeloides, Artemisia annua, Rehmannia glutinosa, Bupleurum chinense, Gentiana macrophylla, and Carapax tricolor to treat fever due to yin deficiency and afternoon hot flashes.
