[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb with roots of Coptis chinensis, a plant of the Primulaceae family.

[Original form] Coptis chinensis, perennial herb. The rhizome is creeping; the stem is erect, 40-80cm high, with fine glandular hairs on the upper part. Leaves are opposite, or in whorls of 3-4, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, 4-12cm long, 5-40mm wide, with acute to acuminate apex, obtuse or nearly rounded base, green above, nearly glabrous, often pink-green below, glabrous, covered with small glandular hairs only along the midrib, with scattered black glandular dots on both sides, lateral veins usually more than 10 pairs, and obvious reticulate veins. The inflorescence is terminal, usually compound and panicle; the bracts are glandular and densely covered with small glandular hairs; the pedicel is 7-12mm long; the calyx is deeply lobed into 5 parts nearly to the base, the lobes are narrowly ovate-triangular, with a circle of black lines on the edge and glandular cilia; the corolla is dark yellow, about 8mm long, 5-lobed nearly to the base, the lobes are oblong, the apex is rounded and obtuse, with obvious veins, and the inner surface is densely covered with small light yellow glands; the stamens are shorter than the corolla, the lower half of the filaments are fused into a tube, densely covered with small glands, the anthers are centrally fixed, ovate-oblong, and longitudinally fissured; the ovary is glabrous, and the vertebra is 4-5mm long. The capsule is brown, 2-4 mm in diameter. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from August to September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: It grows in meadows, forest edges and shrubs. The upper limit of vertical distribution can reach 2100m above sea level.
