[Source] It is the root or stem of the plant Phellodendron chinense of the Menispermaceae family. Harvest in autumn, wash, cut into sections and dry.

[Original form] A shrub in the shape of a tree, more than 10 meters long. The branches are light gray, and the twigs have longitudinal stripes. The leaves are alternate, ovate or oblong, 10-20 cm long, 4-10 cm wide, with a sharp tip, entire margin, rounded base, leathery, green above and lighter below; the petiole is 4-12 cm long, with fine longitudinal ridges and swollen base. Compound racemes, axillary, dioecious; 6 perianths, green-white, with 3 small bracts outside; male flowers have 3 stamens, short-rod filaments, elliptical anthers, short and thick; female flowers have reduced stamens, 3-chambered ovary, and capitate stigma. The fruit cluster is about 30 cm long, woody, with a 3-4 cm long stalk and a 2-3 cm long drupe, with remains of a stigma on the top. The seeds are oblong, kidney-shaped in cross section, with horny, abundant endosperm and leaf-shaped cotyledons. Flowering period is from April to May. The fruiting period is from October to November.

【Habitat distribution】Grows in dense forests. Distributed in Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong and other places. Produced in Guangxi and Guangdong.

[Properties] ① The dried roots are cylindrical, curved and twisted, 15 to 75 cm long and 0.5 to 2 cm thick. The surface is earthy brown, and becomes brown-yellow after removing the cork. The lenticels are not obvious; the skin is easy to peel off. The cork layer in the cross section is extremely thin and dark brown; the phloem is well developed; the xylem is radially arranged, porous, and hard, and both the phloem and xylem are bright yellow. It tastes extremely bitter and can turn saliva yellow.

[Chemical composition] The root contains palmatine, jatropha, africanine, flavonoids A, flavonoids B, flavonolides, and sterols.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet and bitter, cold, poisonous.

【Meridian】 "Guangxi Chinese Materia Medica": "enters the heart and liver meridians."

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, detoxifies, promotes diuresis and laxative. Treat food poisoning, constipation due to heat, dysentery, infectious hepatitis, sores, red eyes, and sore throat.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 2 to 4 qian. For external use: grind into juice or powder for application.
