Benzoin's effects and functions

Everyone is familiar with benzoin, but of course some people are relatively unfamiliar with it. In fact, benzoin is a relatively common Chinese medicinal material. So what exactly does benzoin do?

【English name】 BENZOINUM

【Other name】 White flower taro

[Source] This product is the dried resin of Styrax tonkinensis (Pierre) Craib ex Hart., a plant of the Styracaceae family. When the trunk is naturally damaged or the trunk is cut in summer or autumn, the resin that flows out is collected and dried in the shade.

[Properties] This product is irregular small pieces, slightly flat, often sticking together into lumps. The surface is orange-yellow with a waxy luster (natural fat secretion); or it may be irregular cylindrical or flat, with a grayish white to light yellowish white surface (artificial fat secretion). It is brittle, easy to break, with a flat cross section and is white in color. It gradually turns from light yellow-brown to reddish-brown after being left to stand. It softens and melts when heated. It has a fragrant aroma, slightly spicy taste, and feels like sand when chewed.

【Identification】 (1) Take about 0.25g of this product, place it in a dry test tube, and heat it slowly. A pungent aroma will be produced, and a large number of prismatic crystals of sublimation will be produced.

【Nature and flavor】 Pungent, bitter, neutral.

[Functions and indications] It can invigorate the mind, promote qi and blood circulation, and relieve pain. It is used for stroke due to phlegm, sudden syncope caused by qi stagnation, coma caused by poisoning, pain in the heart and abdomen, fainting after childbirth, and convulsions in children.

[Usage and Dosage] 0.6-1.5g, mostly used in pills or powders.
