Clematis obtuse, vine, up to 5m tall. The stem has longitudinal stripes. Leaves opposite, once pinnate, with 3-7 leaflets; leaflets ovate or oblong, 2-9cm long, 1-4.5cm wide, acuminate or short acuminate at apex, rounded or shallowly cordate at base, margin sparsely 1-several serrated teeth, or entire, pubescent on both sides. The panicle cymes are axillary, many-flowered, with pedicels 2-8cm long, with short soft hairs, and a pair of leaf-like bracts at the base of the peduncle; the flowers are bisexual, 1.5-2cm in diameter; there are 4 sepals, obovate or elliptical, 0.7-1.1cm long, white, spreading, obtuse at the apex, with short soft hairs on both sides, and densely covered with short velvet on the outer edge; petals are absent; stamens are numerous, glabrous, about 6mm long; carpels are numerous, glabrous, and the styles are slender and long soft hairs. Achenes, flat ovate, about 3-4mm long, glabrous or slightly pubescent near the style, persistent style feathery, up to 3cm long.
