[Source] The whole herb of Radix Codonopsis pilosulae, a plant of the Rubiaceae family. It can be harvested throughout the year, washed, cut into sections, and dried or used fresh.

[Original form] Perennial herb. The stem is erect, cylindrical, 30 to 50 cm high, woody at the base, with slightly swollen nodes and slightly purple-black. Leaves are opposite; petioles are short; leaf blades are oblong-lanceolate or ovate-elliptic, 4-12 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide, acuminate at apex, broadly cuneate at base, entire, green above, pink-green below, with raised veins below and 4 pairs of lateral veins extending in arcs; stipules are united into a cup shape with linear teeth. The inflorescence capitula is axillary, with a stalk 0.5 to 2.5 cm long; the florets are dark purple. Capsule spherical.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in the grass beside the road on the hillside. Distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan.

【Nature and flavor】Pungent, slightly bitter, warm.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and dampness, reduces inflammation and sets bones. Treat malaria, hepatitis, rheumatic bone pain, and conjunctivitis.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3 to 5 qian; or soaked in wine. For external use: mash the juice and apply to eyes.

[Additional prescription] ① For treating malaria: 5 qian of black knot grass, 4 qian of standing turtle dove, and 5 qian of red barnyard grass. Decoction in water.
