[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of the Apiaceae plant Ligusticum chuanxiong.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 30-80cm tall. The rhizome is slender, with obvious nodules and dark brown. Cylindrical, hollow, with fine striations. The basal leaves and leaves on the lower part of the stem have long petioles, 15-20cm long, and expanded into a sheath at the base; the leaf blade is ovate in outline, two to three times pinnately divided, with 5-7 pairs of pinnae, oblong-ovate, 3-5 pairs of pinnoles, ovate, the final lobe is obovate to fan-shaped, about 1cm long, about 0.5cm wide, irregularly serrated, with a small tip at the lobe tip, and the veins are simplified to sheath-like. Compound umbels terminal or axillary, 5-7cm in diameter; 8-10 bracts, linear; 12-20 rays, 2-3cm long, 6-10 bracteoles, linear; calyx teeth not obvious; petals white, obovate; stylopodium round cushion-shaped, 2 styles, recurved downward. The fruit is oval, about 5mm long and 3mm wide, with the dorsal ridge slightly raised and the lateral ridges expanded into wings; there are 3 oil tubes in each groove and 6 oil tubes on the symphysis; the dorsal ridge is significantly raised and the lateral ridges expanded into wings; there are 3 oil tubes in each groove and 6 oil tubes on the symphysis; the ventral surface of the endosperm is straight. The flowering period is August-September, and the fruiting period is October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing under forests, on grass slopes and beside ditches at an altitude of 2400-3300m.

[Chemical composition] The root contains asaricin, eugenin, noreugenin, bergapten, falcarindiol, fernlic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, β-sitosterol and daucos-terol.
