[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of Panax notoginseng of the ginger family.

[Original form] Hainan Panax notoginseng, perennial herb. The rhizome is tuberous. The leaves appear first, followed by the flowers; the petioles are short and groove-shaped; the leaves are oblong, 17-27cm long and 7.5-9.5cm wide, light green on the surface, dark green on both sides of the midrib, and purple on the back. The capitula has 4-6 flowers, growing in purple-brown bracts 4.5-7cm long, and directly emerging from the rhizome in spring; the calyx tube is 4.5-7cm long and cracked on one side; the corolla tube is about the same length as the calyx tube, the corolla lobes are linear, white, about 5cm long, and flat when flowering; the lateral degenerate stamens are needle-shaped, about 5cm long, about 1.7cm wide, white, with acute apex, erect, and slightly overlapping; the lip is blue-purple, nearly round, deeply lobed to 2 lobes below the middle, the lobes are about 3.5cm long, about 2cm wide, with acute apex, and drooping; the connective appendages are 2-lobed, needle-shaped, erect at the top of the anther chamber, with irregular notches on the edges and pointed apex. Flowering period is April.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows in sunny places of grassland; or cultivated.

【Chemical composition】 Contains starch and croton oxide.

【Properties and flavors】 Spicy; warm; slightly toxic

【Functions and indications】Promote blood circulation and relieve pain. Mainly used for traumatic injury; stomachache

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3-6g; or made into pills or powder. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application; or grind it into powder and apply.
