[Chemical composition] The preen gland (also known as tail gland or feather gland) secretes a waxy liquid, the composition of which is: water 60.807%, solids 39.193%, protein 17.966%, ether soluble part 18.777%, soluble ash 0.371%, insoluble ash 0.336%, higher alcohol 7.423%, oleic acid 5.848%, lower fatty acids 0.373%, lecithin 0.233%. The part dissolved in ether is mainly lipids; the low-level fatty acids include lauric acid and myristic acid. The mixed fatty acids in the secretion fluid are left-handed, which is a characteristic. Two branched fatty acids, tetramethyldecanoic acid and tetramethylundecanoic acid, have been found.
