The leaves are opposite, ovate-oblong, 10-21 cm long, 4-13 cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, rounded or shallowly cordate at the base, with irregular shallow serrations on the edges, 5-7 main veins, and countless parallel fine veins between the veins; with long petioles, and the pair of leaves under the upper inflorescence are sessile. The panicle is terminal; the calyx and petals are purple-red; the calyx is tubular, covered with stellate hairs, and has 4 teeth at the tip; there are 4 petals, obovate, and gradually pointed at the tip; there are 8 stamens, 4 of which are longer, with S-shaped anthers, purple, and 4 are shorter, with straight anthers, yellow; the ovary is inferior, 4-chambered, and the style is S-shaped. Capsule fusiform, loculicidal, with 8 ribs. Seeds numerous, sickle-shaped.
