[Source] It is the whole herb of Amaranthus chinensis, a plant of the Amaranthaceae family. Available all year round. Use dried or fresh.

[Original form] Perennial herb, up to 50 cm tall. The stems are often quadrupedal, pubescent, and often prostrate at the base. Leaves are opposite, elliptical or obovate-rhombus, 2-5 cm long, obtuse or acute at apex, cuneate at base, and covered with appressed soft hairs on both sides. The racemes are terminal or axillary; the florets are sparsely distributed, with one involucre borne at the base of the florets, ovate; the flowers are small and pedunculate; the bracts are 2, broadly ovate; the sepals are 5, oblong, 2-2.5 mm long, with 3 veins, and densely covered with long soft hairs on the outside; the stamens are 5, fused at the base; the sterile stamens are short-ligulate, with obtuse or two shallow lobes at the apex; the calyx and bracts of the sterile flowers are transformed into hooked thorns. The utricle does not dehisce. Flowering period is from September to November.

[Habitat distribution] It grows under forests on hillsides, by rivers or in the shade of valleys. Distributed throughout South China.
