【English name】 RADIX ANGELICAE PUBESCENTIS

[Other names] Fragrant Angelica dahurica, Rou Angelica dahurica, Sichuan Angelica dahurica, Ziqiu Angelica dahurica

[Source] This product is the dried root of Angelica pubescens Maxim. f. biserrata Shan et Yuan, a plant of the Umbelliferae family. Dig up the seeds when the seedlings just sprout in early spring or when the stems and leaves wither in late autumn, remove the fibrous roots and mud, bake them until half dry, pile them for 2 to 3 days, and bake them until completely dry after they become soft.

[Properties] The root of this product is slightly cylindrical, with 2 to 3 branches or more at the lower part, and is 10 to 30 cm long. The root head is enlarged, conical, with many transverse wrinkles, 1.5 to 3 cm in diameter, with the remnants or depressions of stems and leaves at the top, the surface is gray-brown or brown-brown, with longitudinal wrinkles, raised transverse lenticels and slightly protruding fine root marks. The texture is hard, but becomes soft when exposed to moisture. The cross section of the cortex is off-white with many scattered brown oil chambers. The wood is off-white to yellow-brown, and the cambium ring is brown. It has a unique aroma, bitter and spicy taste, and a slight numbing effect on the tongue.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of this product: rows of cork cells. The cortex is narrow and has a few oil chambers. The phloem is broad, occupying about 1/2 of the root; there are many oil chambers, arranged in several whorls, about 153μm in tangential direction, and surrounded by 6 to 10 secretory cells. The cambium is ring-shaped. Xylem rays are 1 to 2 rows of cells wide; vessels are sparse, up to 84 μm in diameter, and often arranged singly in radial arrangement. The thin-walled cells contain starch granules.
