If the sun suddenly goes out, how long can humans survive with the level of modern technology?

It can be said that everything that all living things on Earth have is given by the sun. Without the sun, all life on Earth will die and disappear.

However, this question is somewhat inaccurate, because generally speaking, the sun will not suddenly go out, but a series of changes will occur before it goes out, such as violent explosions, red giant stage, white dwarf stage, etc. During these drastic changes, the earth's life will be destroyed.

If we must answer the question of the sudden extinction of the star for unknown reasons, the impact on the earth can be analyzed from at least three aspects, namely, changes in gravity, falling into darkness, and the arrival of severe cold.

We know that the Earth revolves around the Sun at a speed of about 30 kilometers per second, influenced by the Sun's gravity. If the Sun suddenly goes out, or disappears suddenly, this huge source of gravity will no longer exist, and the Earth will no longer revolve, but will escape into the distant space.

However, the Earth's escape will also be affected by the gravity of other planets such as Jupiter, forming a complex trajectory.

This change in gravity will cause drastic changes in the Earth's crust and oceans. Extreme earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change will wreak havoc around the world, and humans and all living things will die out in a very short time.

If the sun disappears, the earth will fall into complete darkness. Without light, all plants that rely on photosynthesis to grow will die, the food chain will be broken, and animals that rely on consuming plants to survive will soon starve to death. Carnivores and omnivores will also die as a result.

Without sunlight, the harm is not just as simple as causing a break in the food chain. In fact, all living things rely on the sun to grow healthily. Without the sun, they cannot grow normally. Even if they do not starve to death, they will die from various diseases.

This kind of death will take a relatively long time. But the problem is that without sunlight, it is not just darkness, but the earth will lose all energy, so the temperature will drop quickly, down to minus 100 degrees Celsius, and eventually to minus 200 degrees Celsius, close to absolute zero, the earth will become a hard ice ball, and all life will be frozen.

The time of death for various reasons after losing the sun will be different, but each of these ways of death will not exist alone. Instead, they will appear in combination. The earliest blow should be the change in gravity. In the hellish scene of landslides and cracks in the ground, all life may disappear; what should follow is extreme cold, and life will quickly be frozen; and finally, death from starvation.

The extinction time of these three ways of death is about one month, three months, and several years respectively. But the problem is that the creatures will all become extinct in the sudden change of gravity and the extreme cold before they can starve to death.

Another possibility is that although the sun is extinguished, it remains in its original position, so the gravity will not change. In this way, the only two ways for the creatures on Earth to die are the ones mentioned above, and they can survive a little longer.

Finally, with the current level of human technology, it is impossible to cope with a disaster like the sun going out, and the time that can delay human extinction is completely negligible.
