【English Name】 Root of Clammy Hopseedbush

[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of Salix babylonica, a plant of the Sapindaceae family.

[Original form] Cistanche deserticola, shrub or small tree, 1-3m tall or taller. Branchlets flat, narrowly winged or angular, covered with a gelatinous mucus. Simple leaves are alternate; petioles are short or nearly sessile; leaf blades are papery, with great variation in shape and size, linear, linear-spatulate, linear-lanceolate, oblanceolate or oblong, 5-12cm long, 0.5-4cm wide, with short pointed, obtuse or rounded apex, entire or inconspicuously wavy margins, with sticky fluid on both sides, glabrous, and shiny when dry. Flowers are solitary, dioecious and red; inflorescences are terminal or axillary on the upper part of twigs, shorter than leaves, densely florid, with angular main axis and branches; pedicels are slender, 2-5mm long, sometimes up to 1cm; sepals are 4, lanceolate or oblong, about 3mm long, obtuse at the apex, 7 or 8 stamens, filaments less than 1mm long, anthers 2.5mm long, inflexed, with glandular dots; ovary is elliptical, with gelatinous mucus on the outside, 2 or 3-chambered style about 6mm long, with 2 or 3 deep lobes at the apex. The capsule is obcordate or oblate, with 2 or 3 wings 1.8-2.5cm wide, and the seed coat is membranous or papery with veins. Seeds 1 or 2 per locule, lens-shaped, black. The flowering period is late autumn, and the fruiting period is late winter and early spring.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on arid hillsides, open fields or sandy soil by the sea.

[Chemical composition] The root bark contains isorhamnetin and quercetin.

【Functions and indications】Purging fire and detoxifying. Treats toothache; wind poison inflow

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 15-30g, fresh product 30-60g.
