[Source] It is the seeds of Camellia oleifera, a plant of the Theaceae family. Harvest in autumn.

[Original form] Camellia oleifera (A Long Compilation of Illustrated Records of Plant Names and Realities), also known as: hawthorn (Complete Book of Agricultural Administration), ash tree (Supplement to Compendium of Materia Medica), tea tree, tea oil tree, Jian tea, white flower tea, tea tree.

[Habitat distribution] Distributed in Sichuan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and other places.

[Chemical composition] The seeds contain camellia glycosides, fatty oils (glycerides of oleic acid, stearic acid, etc.) and saponins. The sapogenins whose structures are known include: 22α-hydroxyeucalyptol, barberry alcohol A1, sapogenin ST-1, camellia sapogenin A, camellia sapogenin B, tea saponin A, tea saponin B, and tea saponin E.

[Pharmacological action] Camellia glycosides have anti-cancer effects. When given orally to mice every other day and topically applied to carcinogens for several months, the number of skin papillomas and skin cancers can be reduced. Topical application of camellia glycosides is ineffective. When camellia glycosides are present in the blood, they have an anti-cancer effect. If their effect stops, the number of skin cancers quickly increases to a level similar to that of the control group.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, neutral, poisonous.

【Functions and indications】 ① "Luchuan Materia Medica": "It promotes the flow of qi and relieves stagnation. It treats abdominal pain and diarrhea caused by qi stagnation."

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decoct in water, 2 to 3 qian. For external use: decoct in water for washing or grind into powder for application.

[Additional prescription] Treating diarrhea caused by indigestion: 3 grams of tea seed heart. Take it in concentrated decoction. (Luchuan Materia Medica)
