[Source] It is the whole herb of Gynura serrata, a plant of the Ranunculaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 15 to 40 cm high. The tuber is gray-black and slightly fusiform or oval. The stems are clustered, slender, erect, branched, and covered with fine white hairs. The radicular leaves are clustered and have long petioles; the leaves are 1-3-compound, with leaflets broadly cuneate and 3-lobed, with lobes rounded at the tip or with 2-3 small notches, green above and purple below, smooth and hairless; the petioles are short and have fine soft hairs; the stem leaves are similar to the radicular leaves, but gradually become smaller from bottom to top. The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils, and the pedicels elongate after fruiting, with two thin bracts in the middle; the flowers are small and white; the sepals are 5, petal-like, ovate; the petals are 5, cuneate, slightly shorter than the sepals; there are usually 10 stamens, 2 of which are incompletely developed; there are 3 to 4 pistils, the ovary is narrow and long, and the style is short and curled outwards. There are 3 to 4 follicles, which are pod-shaped and crack when ripe. The seeds are small and obovate. Flowering period is from March to April. The fruit ripens from May to June.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in shady and moist places such as under forests, rock crevices, and grass. Distributed in Southwest, East my country, Northeast China and other places.

【Functions and indications】Reduce swelling; detoxify and promote diuresis. Treat scrofula, hernia, and urinary problems.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 3 to 5 qian. For external use: mash and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① For treating scrofula: 1 liang 5 qian of Gynura purpurogenum, 1 liang each of seaweed, kelp, kelp, Fritillaria, Platycodon grandiflorum, and 5 qian of cuttlebone. Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, and make into pills as big as sycamore seeds using wine paste. Take 70 pills each time, with warm wine after meals.
