[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of the plant Sea Cucumber japonicus of the family Szechwansaceae.

[Original form] Large-flowered sea cucumber, perennial herb, up to 60cm tall. The basal leaves are lanceolate or broadly linear, 5-15cm long and up to 2.5cm wide, with sparse prickles on the edges, the leaf base extending downward and adhering to the stem, with 3-5 flat veins. The flower branches emerge from the side of the leaf cluster, with 2-3 pairs of leaves, ovate-lanceolate to narrow elliptic, with dense thorns on the base edge, and sessile. The inflorescence is terminal, capitate or with a whorl of cymes below; the bracts are rhombus-ovate, with hard thorns on the edges, often purple, and there are 3 flowers in each axil; there are no bracteoles; the calyx is tubular, 7-9mm long, obliquely cracked at the top, with long soft hairs and thorns on the edges, arranged irregularly; the flowers are large, 1.2-1.5cm in diameter; the corolla is red, funnel-shaped and tubular, up to 4cm long, with 5 lobes, oblong, 5-6mm long, slightly concave at the apex, and the corolla tube is 4-5mm wide; there are 4 stamens, on one side of the corolla throat; the style is higher than the stamens, the stigma is capitate, and the ovary is enclosed in a cup-shaped involucre. Achenes are oblong-obovate, yellowish-white, with a longitudinal groove on one side, and the persistent calyx is large and purple. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from July to September.
